Internet connectivity requirements
General requirements
For our micro markets, we require an ordinary hardwired ethernet internet connection to access the internet to operate our kiosks. Generally, any internet connection will work, and more specifically:
- Any cabling type (for example, CAT5 or CAT6) is suitable.
- The use of a firewall is acceptable.
- Connectivity may be provided via an internet outlet, router, ethernet switch or any similar type of connection.
Port requirements
If your IT network restricts port access, our kiosks require access to:
- Ports 80 and 443 for HTTP and HTTPS requests; and
- Ports 65 and 443 to communicate with the Windcave host (our payment gateway).
Our use of internet connectivity – in detail
Our use of internet connectivity is limited, and we use the internet connection to make normal HTTPS requests to our server and payment gateway. The most common requests are:
- To update the kiosk app;
- To check server connectivity status;
- To fetch product images and other product information (e.g. prices);
- To authorise payment transactions.
Payment transactions are processed by our gateway provider, and limited information only (price, credit card details) are provided to them for each transaction.
Key elements of our internet connectivity that may be relevant to provide to your IT team are shown in the following table.
Average traffic load | Low – 1 – 2 GB per month |
VPN usage | None – no VPN used |
Request types | All requests are served over HTTPS (fully encrypted) |
App update frequency | Typically, once per quarter, and at most, once per month. |
App execution method | The POS app runs as a shell process, reducing other computer activity to a minimum. |
Remote access | We use TeamViewer for remote access. We don’t use this except for troubleshooting / debugging. |
